Named for the scenic 290 highway that winds past the Collings shop though the Texas Hill Country, the 290 is a modern-day tribute to the original working man's rock 'n roll guitar. A solid mahogany body and neck are complimented by two Lollar Soap Bar P90 pickups for a tone that shows off the amazing harmonic range and dynamics of this iconic configuration. We truly believe the Collings 290 perfects the slab mahogany, dual P90 design because it is exceptionally versatile and free of the deficiencies that have held earlier iterations back.
This Collings 290 (serial #171419) features standard specs including Lollar P90s, but we ordered it in TV Yellow finish with an ivoroid-bound fingerboard and a Bigsby vibrato tailpiece. Like every 290, this one has impressive natural resonance when played unplugged (thanks to solid Honduran Mahogany), which affords woody, dynamic tone and excellent sustain when plugged in. We love the full feel of Collings' C-shaped neck, and their slick recessed neck heel allows for effortless access into the upper register. This 290 is an expressive, versatile instrument that is ready to push your amp over the cliff.
