In the late '80s, guitar builder Paul Reed Smith called on Ted McCarty—the former Gibson president responsible for some of the finest guitars built in Kalamazoo. Paul asked Ted to consult on guitar design and production techniques, and over the years, PRS's designs have relied heavily on McCarty's ideas and influence. In 2015, PRS unveiled the McCarty 594, which represents the pinnacle of Paul's collaboration with Ted.
The model name for this particular McCarty 594 captures just about every PRS buzzword. Made in 2019, this is a McCarty 594 Singlecut Semi-Hollow with a 10-Top. With two 58/15 LT humbuckers that can be coil-tapped, the result is an extremely versatile guitar, decked out with characteristic Paul Reed Smith Flair. The figure in the top is intense, and the McCarty Tobacco Sunburst finish sets it off!
The McCarty 594 gets its name from its 24.594" scale length. PRS settled on this measurement because it combines the best of both worlds—accurate tuning/proper intonation and overall ease of playability. Notes bend effortlessly and the guitar remains stable throughout. From there, this one has a single-cutaway body that is semi-hollow, and that provides more sustain and a woodier, more open sound. Plus, it relieves some weight—this PRS weighs in at 7 lbs 10.7 oz!
This 2019 McCarty 594 Singlecut has been played, but it is gently used and finds us in nice shape (see photos). The setup is low, and it plays fast and smooth all the way up the neck. The semi-hollow construction gives it more of resonance and an almost acoustic response. When you explore the various settings, you can access a wide range of sounds—very typical of Paul Reed Smith! It's a gorgeous guitar with the tone, features, and playability to back up the good looks. Original hardshell case, hang tag, and paperwork included!
