Introduced in 1958 as an inexpensive, good-sounding student model, the Gibson LG-0 features all-mahogany construction and ladder-bracing—both intending to keep the guitar cost effective. In so doing, though, Gibson created something new: a warm-sounding, bluesy small-body guitar that filled a hole in their acoustic lineup.

Keeping the price affordable was so important to Gibson that they even opted for a plastic bridge starting in 1962. Unfortunately, these old guitars often fell into disrepair, either because of the ladder-braced design and plastic bridge (which inevitably failed). Sometimes, it might be because the guitar was bought at a rummage sale, and a previous owner figured it was just another plain old guitar that didn't need extra TLC. In reality, these old Kalamazoo-made boxes are well worth the effort. When you get one right, they can be as rich-sounding and inspiring as vintage instruments 100 times their price.

This 1965 Gibson LG-0 is from the plastic-bridge era, but fortunately a previous owner replaced the original bridge with a proper solid rosewood bridge. On the inside, all of the original metal bolts that kept the bridge in place have been removed, and the bridge plate has been reinforced. This all amounts to a huge improvement from the original design, and the work brings out the best of this LG-0's voice.

In addition to all the work around the bridge area, a previous owner also installed a Shadow NanoMag pickup and the companion sound hole Sonic NanoMag preamp. It's a flexible setup that allows you to replicate the guitar's acoustic voice on stage or in the studio.

Cosmetically, this 1965 LG-0 is in nice shape, considering its age. The original finish show the expected checking all around, but it is free of any severe issues, breaks, wood cracks, or damages. The tuning machines have been changed out to older three-on-plate replacements, and they hold tune nicely. A strap button has been added to the neck heel, and it appears that the fingerboard was refretted in the past. The current setup is nice and inviting, but there isn't much saddle left at the bridge. Fortunately, it has a functional truss rod for future adjustment at that end. This '65 LG-0 includes a slightly oversized gig bag that will help you transport this LG-0 wherever it needs to go.
