Since the late 1980s, NK Forster has been quietly building a reputation as one of the most distinctive luthiers of his generation. A former apprentice of Stefan Sobell, Forster borrows from traditional ideas, but he has a reputation for introducing innovative structural design and 21st Century design flair. As a result, NK Fortster guitars are both visually striking and sonically exceptional. The Parlour King Tenor is a prime example—a purpose-built tenor guitar that embraces new-age style while delivering modern precision and playability.
Built in 2021, this Parlour King Tenor features a lattice-braced Cedrela top paired with Mahogany back and sides. The combination produces remarkable projection and clarity from such a compact body, with a warm, resonant tone that belies its size. Measuring 12-7/8" across the lower bout and about 4" deep, the body shape balances intimacy with surprising power, while the 19" scale length and bolt-on 12th-fret mahogany neck make for a responsive, comfortable feel. An Ebony fingerboard, "Ebano" composite bridge, and gold Hipshot tuners complete the refined yet understated aesthetic, finished in satin natural.
This 2021 Parlour King Tenor is in excellent playing condition, and it shows some minor signs of wear and use. There are some finish blemishes on the top worth pointing out (see photos). It was recently at Elderly Instruments in Lansing, Michigan, where the Elderly repair shop did a professional neck reset and fingerboard heat press, ensuring optimal playability. The work so the guitar is dialed-in and ready for stage or studio use.
For players seeking something outside the mainstream, this Parlour King Tenor demonstrates Nigel Forster’s out-of-the-box approach to design and sound. Few modern builders offer a tenor guitar, but NK Forster delivers one with impressive vision and taste—both a practical player’s tool and a luthier’s work of art. It includes its original hardshell case.
