Originally built by Crafters of Tennessee, Owens resonator guitars are the brainchild of guitarist/producer/luthier Richie Owens. Shortly after they were first introduced, the Owens name was purchased by Zeta Music Industries, best known for innovative electric pickup systems for violins, cellos, and other bowed string instruments. Under Zeta's ownership, Owens were outfitted with cutting-edge Zeta pickups. But shortly after they hit the scene, Owens folded after only producing a handful instruments. Because of that, these high-quality resonators are hard to find!
This Owens O-RMB was made in the early 2000s, approximately 2003. It features a 14-fret neck and a smallish cast aluminum body. At only 14" across on the lower bout and 17-3/4" long, the body feels manageable and comfortable—almost like a parlor guitar. Despite the small size, it still houses a full-size 9.5" resonator cone. The cast aluminum helps it produce the loud, throaty sound we love from metal-body resonators, but it's not as heavy as silver-plated brass instruments. This O-RMB weighs in under 6.5 lbs—6 lbs 7.5 oz to be exact.
Other than the unique size/construction of the body, the Zeta pickup system is what really sets this O-RMB apart from other resonators. Based on the Zeta Strados amplification system for violins, the pickup is mounted directly to the Maple biscuit on the resonator tone. It is equipped with an active EMG preamp that allows you to set overall gain as well as fine tune the string balance on all six strings. Plugged in, it produces natural, consistent tone with minimal feedback.
This 2000s Owens O-RMB is gently used, it shows some signs of playwear, and the metal is slightly tarnished (see photos). The scale length measures 25", and the nut width is 1-13/16". It plays nicely with a soft V shaped profile. The frets have sprouted, chipping the finish along the edges of the fingerboard. Higher up on the bass side of the fingerboard, the finish is bubbled where the fingerboard meets the neck. This purely cosmetic and doesn't affect playability whatsoever. The frets are in great shape, and there's a strap button on the heel.
With its unique, eye-catching inlays and cool textured black finish, this 2000s Owens O-RMB would be an excellent resonator for the stage. Fortunately, it's already equipped with a good pickup, too. It includes a National-branded hardshell case.
