Following the success of the Limited Edition 000-42EC in 1995, Martin introduced the 000-28 Eric Clapton in 1996. The 000-28EC was Martin's first stock production signature model, and it remains a hugely popular model in the line to this day.
Eric has called the 000-28EC "utilitarian" in the very best sense of the word. Loosely based on the 1939 000-42 Eric played in his iconic MTV Unplugged performance, the model starts with a comfortable 000-body and playable 24.9" scale length. With the classic wood complement of Sitka Spruce and East Indian Rosewood, the result is versatile, balanced tone with impressive clarity. Thanks to scalloped bracing under the hood, the top responds quickly, even with a light touch. Its wide dynamic range is natural fit for fingerstyle players, but it also sounds great with a pick.
This 2023 Martin 000-28EC is #26002 in the series. It shows some minor play wear, and there are two cosmetic notes included in the photo set: 1) a scuff on the bass edge of the top, and 2) a ding on the bass side near the end pin. The edges of the headstock also show wear from string changes (see photos). The previous owner upgraded the tuners to gold open-back tuners from Waverly, and the saddle and bridge pins have also been upgraded. The pins are fossil Walrus ivory and they are gorgeous.
On this 2023 000-28EC, the playability is excellent. When you first pick it up, the Modified V fills your hand like an old Martin from the '30s. The setup is low and approachable, and the guitar produces a balanced sound with ringing clarity, smooth sustain, and plenty of bass presence. The 1-3/4" nut feels just right, and the saddle spacing is almost 1/32" wider than the 2-1/4" spec sheet (2.283" on the digital calipers). As you dig in, the guitar sounds like the top is just beginning to open up. The subtlety, nuance, and character will only get better over the years! Original hardshell case included.
