When Martin rolled out the D-35 in 1965, it brought a different sound and vibe to the world of rosewood dreadnoughts. The distinctive three-piece back and bound Ebony fingerboard set the D-35 apart visually from other Martin models. But the expressive, quarter-inch bracing under the hood are what deliver the refined, cutting tone that inspired generations of players, from Johnny Cash to Seth Avett. The D-35 is a versatile guitar you won't want to put down.

This D-35 (serial #373828) was is a bicentennial-year Martin made in 1976, and it features a gorgeous three-piece back. The two outer pieces show nice book match, and the darker color of the center piece constrasts them beautifully. For its age, this D-35 finds us in impressive cosmetic condition, and repair history is minimal, too. Most notable is a repaired and cleated pickguard crack, and that may indicate the pickguard is a replacement. Apart from that, it has had a neck reset and a refret, and the saddle has been replaced. It also looks like the heel cap was re-glued, probably at the same time. It is possible the bridge was re-glued as well, but if so, it was very clean professional job that left no rash or marks on the top.

Because of the neck reset, new frets, and new saddle, this D-35 does not suffer from the playability and intonation issues sometimes found on '70s Martins. At the moment, it has medium action that feels fast and accessible, but still allows plenty of room to dig in and get under the strings. Relative to other rosewood dreadnoughts, the D-35 product more midrange, and this '76 has a nice sense of balance. Still, it packs the power and punch we love from good played-in Martin dreadnoughts.

This 1976 Martin D-35 shows general playwear, and there are some minor scratches on the back from buttons or zippers (see photos). But all in all, this Martin has been cared for, and it is free of any severe cosmetic damages, dings, or gouges. It also has never had a strap button installed on the heel. It includes its original blue molded plastic case. This dreadnought will not disappoint!
