Collings started experimenting with mandolin family designs in 1999, and Collings quickly became some of the most highly-regarded mandolins made in the US. Constructed of the finest materials available and built with 21st-Century precision, Collings mandolins are serious instruments for serious players. Nowadays, Collings offers a limited lumber of mandolin build slots, so brand new Collings mandolin are hard to find and used ones don't come around often!
Collings completed this MT mandolin (serial #4631) in 2024. The MT is a straight-forward, A-style mandolin. It features a carved Engelmann Spruce top with carved Eastern Flame Maple back and sides. The top is hard-carved to its own unique thickness to maximize the potential of the instrument. As a result, the tone is warmer and more-rounded than an F-style mandolin, and the mandolin has clarity without sounding harsh and thin. There is a resonant, sweet sound to Collings A-models—ringing sustain, a wide dynamic range, and impressive responsiveness make this 2024 MT a versatile mandolin.
While most MTs come standard with a 1-1/8" nut width, this one was custom-ordered with a wide 1-3/16" nut. For many players, the extra space on the fingerboard provides more room to stretch out. In your hands, the rounded V neck profile feels just right, and this mandolin looks the part, too! It is finished in an ultra-thin all-nitrocellulose sunburst finish that is accented by tortoise top binding.
This 2024 Collings MT shows some minor signs of play wear, but it is very clean all around (see photos). The previous owner installed a strap button on the neck heel. It is setup with low, playable action, and the frets show minimal wear. Quality used Collings mandolins don't come around often, so here's a great opportunity to grab a fantastic A model with a wide nut. This 2024 Collings MT includes its original TKL hardshell case.
