In the early '70s, the solid-state Echoplex EP-3 was a much-used studio tool for delivering tape delay echo sounds. When used with guitars, many players noticed that—in addition to the rich echo sounds it produces—the EP-3 also has a killer preamp that can push any amp into smooth saturation. Legendary guitarists such as Jimmy Page, Eric Johnson, and Eddie Van Halen used the EP-3 to craft some of their most recognizable tones.
Original EP-3s sell for ridiculous prices, so it's hard to justify paying so much if you only want the preamp sound. Fortunately, Xotic effects has brought us the EP Booster! Based on the sought-after preamp of the EP-3, the EP Booster delivers up to 20dB of boost that will add an undeniably rich character to your guitar tone. With one knob and a foot switch, this pedalboard-friendly device is easy to use, and once you hear what it can do to your amp, it'll be hard to turn it off.
This Xotic EP Booster is gently used. This is the post-2011 V2 design that has the internal dip switches to help you dial in the right sound. The label on the underside has faded, and it shows some cometic wear (hey, they get stepped on after all!), but it functions 100% as it should.
