The MF may be Collings’ simplest, most basic F-style mandolin, but like everything Collings, “basic” and "simple" are relative words. There is no question this is a premium instrument built with uncompromising commitment to quality and unparalleled attention to detail, using the finest quality tone woods and components available.
This MF (serial #2073) features a carved solid Adirondack Spruce top and beautiful carved solid Flame Maple back, sides and neck. It is set up with Gotoh Elite tuners, a 1-1/8″ bone nut, a genuine ebony bridge and Collings’ sleek tailpiece, which is more functional and easier for changing strings than many inferior tailpiece designs. Like most Collings mandolins, it is set up with a compound radius fingerboard for smooth action and playability. As for tone, Bluegrass players will be at home with its strong, articulate projection and chop that cuts through any mix, but players from any genre will enjoy its versatility and its fat and balanced–though bright and cutting–sound.
We ordered this MF in Honey Amber finish with a Gloss Top. The Honey Amber provides a beautiful contrast to its tortoise top binding. We love how the satin honey amber finish brings out the gorgeous flame Maple figuring on the back. But as impossible as it may seem, this Collings MF somehow sounds even better than it looks.
