Collings Guitars introduced the Custom Craft series as a platform for one-off builds that showcase the design team’s evolving ideas, materials, and voicing concepts. These are not catalog models and not available by custom order—each release is limited to just a handful of instruments, and once they’re gone, they’re gone.

This 71 Pine is one the latest four Colling's Custom Craft releases, which dropped May 21. It is a prototype that was on display at NAMM 2026, and it is the only 71 made with with a pine body. On top of that, its pine body—and maple neck—are both Torrefied, resulting in an extremely lightweight, resonant instrument that clocks in below 6.5 pounds—to be precise, it weighs in at 6 lbs 6.2 oz on the scale.  The torrefied woods also lend an addictive openness, sustain, and expressive feel for the player.

Under the hood, a set of Lollar La Prima pickups tread an interesting middle ground between traditional single coils and full-sized humbuckers. The tone control is a push/pull for parallel/series wiring. The Parallel setting delivers excellent clarity and top-end detail while retaining the fuller midrange, smooth string-to-string balance, and hum-canceling performance. The Series setting is hotter and more raw—ideal for pushing a tube amp into smooth saturation.

Built around a 25.5" scale length and a set maple neck, the 71 offers a familiar feel with plenty of snap and dynamics. The carefully-contoured body feels graceful, comfortable, and most importantly approachable. While most 71s have a full-size Rutters bridge, the 71 Pine sports a "Chopped" bridge with brass saddles provides a solid foundation for tone and tuning stability. Everything is so well designed and geared toward high-level functionality: the six-in-line peghead has a precise tilt, Kluson Supreme tuners keep everything honest, and custom Bakelite details—including the pickguard, pickup rings, and truss rod cover—give the guitar a distinct aesthetic that shows off the fine woods. While most 71s have a full-size Rutters bridge, the 71 Pine sports a "Chopped" bridge with brass saddles provides a solid foundation for tone and tuning stability.
