Santa Cruz Guitar Company isn't like any other builder, and the Firefly isn't like any other guitar. When Richard Hoover started building Santa Cruz guitars in 1976, his goal was to push guitar-making to a new level of perfection. The goal is to build the finest, most expressive instruments possible—not to maximize sales or profits. That purity of intention translates into exceptional instruments.

The Firefly model came about from an intriguing, 21st Century concept. Current technology has allowed artists to lay down tracks from remote locations, and that creates a need for a sophisticated guitar that travels well and still delivers  professional performance. With that in mind, Santa Cruz experimented with short-scale designs to produce a boutique, perfected little guitar. But they hesitate to describe the Firefly as a "travel" guitar because it is so much more than that. Somehow, the short 24" scale, Cedar top, and small dimensions combine to create something new: an instrument that is deeply expressive and inspiring yet uniquely manageable in size.

The Firefly starts with a very small body—only 16-1/4" long and 13" across on the lower bout. When you combine such a small body with the lower tension of a 24" scale, one might assume the tone would sound small, too. But that isn't the case whatsoever! The Firefly has a Cedar top, which is softer and more flexible than Spruce. With the tension of a full-size guitar, Cedar is easily overpowered, but when voiced properly with hand-scalloped X-bracing, it's the perfect fit to bring out the full character of the sound. The results are extremely impressive.

This 2018 Santa Cruz Firefly is #247, and (if you'll forgive a stupid joke) it is a guitar you'll want to play 24/7. It can go anywhere, and it's friendly in every room in the house, even in the living room on the couch. Its well-balanced, nuanced tone will inspire new songs, passages, and ideas like you never imagined.

This 2018 Firefly is in nice condition with no history of repairs or issues. It is the standard catalog-spec model, and it does show some minor playwear. There are two unfortunate dings on the bass edge of the top (see photos) and two scuffs from when someone wasn't careful with a pick. There is a scuff on the back edge of the peghead as well. No repairs or issues. The setup is low and inviting, and we've got it strung with SCGC Low Tension strings. It includes its original Ameritage case, and if you have never tried a Firefly, this one will surprise you.
