The EarthQuaker Devices Gray Channel is a dual overdrive inspired by one of the classic hard-clipping gray box circuits that helped define modern low-to-medium gain overdrive. Originally developed as a tribute to the pedal that inspired EarthQuaker Devices founder Jamie Stillman to begin building pedals, the Gray Channel expands on that familiar formula with two completely independent drive channels, each offering its own selectable clipping options.
Each side features dedicated Volume, Gain, and Tone controls along with a three-position clipping switch, allowing for a wide range of textures. The Green channel offers Silicon, Germanium, or no clipping diodes for everything from bright, articulate overdrive to warmer, softer breakup or a powerful op-amp boost. The Red channel substitutes LED and MOSFET clipping options for greater headroom, tighter compression, and more aggressive gain, while its no-diode mode delivers the same dynamic boost-to-distortion response.
When the pedal is activated, you can alternate between the two channels, which allows you to dial in the best of both worlds. Despite its broad tonal range, the circuit preserves the natural voice of the guitar and amplifier, offering responsive dynamics and plenty of clarity across its gain spectrum.
This EQD Gray Channel was made in 2018, and it is gently used. It shows some minor wear, especially on the bottom, but it is pretty clean all around. It functions 100% as it should, and it includes its original box and paperwork. The Gray Channel is a versatile overdrive with a lot of sounds on tap. Probably one of the better all-encompassing gray box recreations!
