In the late '80s, guitar builder Paul Reed Smith called on Ted McCarty—the former Gibson president responsible for some of the finest electric guitars built in Kalamazoo—to consult on guitar design and production techniques. Over the years, PRS's designs relied heavily on McCarty's ideas and influence. In 2015, PRS unveiled the McCarty 594, which represents the pinnacle of Paul's collaboration with Ted.
The PRS McCarty 594 infuses vintage tone and inspiration with modern versatility and playability. The result is a guitar that delivers authentic solidbody tone with enhanced sustain, more accurate tuning, precise intonation, and smooth feel. The McCarty 594 gets its name from its 24.594" scale length. PRS settled on this measurement because it combines the best of both worlds—accurate tuning/proper intonation and overall ease of playability. Notes bend effortlessly and the guitar remains stable throughout.
The McCarty 594 starts with a carved Maple top and a slightly thicker Mahogany back which helps the guitar have more natural resonance and sustain. It features two moderate-output 58/15 LT pickups, which produce classic humbucker sounds. But with coil-tapping available on each, smooth humbucker tones transition easily into nuanced single-coil sounds. Thanks to 21st-century precision throughout the build process and its zinc-plated bridge, the McCarty 594 is intoned perfectly all the way up to the 22nd fret.
This 2016 Paul Reed Smith McCarty 594 sports the rare Metallic Green finish. It is in excellent condition with only minimal signs of playwear, no repairs, and no severe cosmetic issues (see photos). This is an eye-catching guitar that will certainly get noticed on any stage, but it also packs the tone and versatility to be a true workhorse. It includes its original hardshell case.
