Widely regarded as the pinnacle year for Martin dreadnoughts—especially the D-28—1937 represents the perfect balance of construction features that defined the pre-war "golden era." By this time, Martin had refined its forward-shifted scalloped X-bracing pattern, giving the top more freedom to vibrate and produce unmatched power, clarity, and responsiveness. The necks featured a 1-3/4" nut width paired with a more approachable rounded “barrel and heel” profile, making them more comfortable to play compared to earlier designs. Combined with Adirondack spruce tops, rosewood back and sides, and hide-glue construction, the 1937 D-28s deliver exceptional projection, dynamic range, and tonal complexity—qualities that have made them the most coveted examples of Martin’s craft.
Built in the Martin Custom Shop, the D-28 Authentic 1937 recreates those legendary specifications in meticulous detail. With forward-shifted scalloped bracing and traditional hide-glue construction, every aspect is crafted to capture the sound and feel of a true pre-war Martin. This D-28 Authentic was made in 2014, so it features Adirondack Spruce for the top, paired with Madagascar Rosewood back and sides. The current model is made with Guatemalan Rosewood, but in our opinion, this earlier spec with Madagascar Rosewood sounds more akin to the Brazilian Rosewood originals. This was also made the year before Martin introduced the VTS treatment, so the nitro finish has a nice gloss to it and the woods have aged naturally since the guitar was built.
This 2014 D-28 Authentic 1937 has been played and enjoyed, but it is in impressive cosmetic condition. The binding has been partially reglued at the waist, but it's such a clean job you'll probably never notice. During this era, Martins were prone to separate at the waist, and a simple reglue is all that was needed. Other than that, there's not much to say—just a really clean used guitar with a fantastic setup! When you dig in, the tone is fat and nuanced, and it shimmers with richness when you play it with a light touch, too. This guitar is 12 years old, so it's starting to develop the smooth, played-in response we love about older guitars.
This Martin D-28 Authentic 1937 is a modern dreadnought that channels the magic of the most sought-after D-28s—an instrument that delivers both thunderous projection and exquisite tonal depth, just like the originals. It includes its original hardshell case and paperwork.
