From the ground up, the OM was designed for steel strings. Its 15"-wide 000 body was massive by '20s standards, and it even had a pickguard and a belly bridge! In many ways, the OM is the stepping stone between the small-body parlor guitars made before 1930 and the revolutionary Dreadnoughts released in 1934.

For whatever reason, most Martin OMs are known to have rosewood back and sides—in the early days, fewer than 800 OM-18s were built. In the modern era, the easiest way to find a mahogany Orchestra Model is to custom order one. And if you're ordering a Custom Shop guitar, why not have some fun and build something special? This 2012 Martin Custom Shop OM-18 proudly demonstrates what the Custom Shop can do with premium woods and a time-honored template.

This 2012 Custom Shop Martin starts with the traditional 25.4" scale on a 000-body. Constructed with '30s-appropriate Hide Glue throughout, this OM-18 features an Adirondack Spruce top and highly-figured Pommele back and sides. Pommele is a type of Mahogany that grows in Africa, and its name come from "Pomme"—French for apple. Do the dramatic curves on the back and sides look like apples? Hard to say, but the intense figuring of the grain is absolutely stunning. It's rare to see Mahogany with character like this. The top is worth pointing out, too—the variation between very wide and incredibly tight grain is fascinating. These are certainly some beautiful, hand-selected pieces of wood!

This Custom Shop guitar was ordered with genuine Brazilian Rosewood binding and heel cap, and the appointments are understated Style-18. It's classy and elegant without being ostentatious. Clean and classic—distinctive Martin. The measurements fall in line with the Golden Era stuff: Waverly tuners, 1-3/4" nut width, 2-3/8" spacing on a cut-through saddle bridge, and a '30s-Style V neck profile. A nod to the original 1930s OMs, it has the "C.F. Martin & Co." stamp on the back of the peghead.

This 2012 Custom Shop OM-18 is used, but in good shape all around. It shows some scuffs and signs of wear—the worst are some chips along the top edge of the lower bout (see photos). The previous owner installed an Ebony strap button on the neck heel. The setup is excellent, and notes ring out clearly and evenly across the register. Typical of a good OM, this Custom Shop Martin packs a balanced sound with a wide dynamic range and touch-sensitive response. A versatile guitar that shines as much with a pick as it does fingerstyle. The Pommele back and sides give it a woodier sound with nice overtones, and the 1/4" braces are scalloped Adirondack, so it projects powerfully with plenty of low end. It includes its original TKL hardshell case.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0080/2930/6939/files/2013MartinCustomShopOM-18_1668638_-Detail05.jpg?v=1781120903
