The Collings D1 pushes the classic 14-fret mahogany dreadnought to a new level. While other companies build guitars with similar specs, Collings brings a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth that have made this template so popular. In general, the Collings D1 is louder—with more balance across the range—and it will cut through any mix.
This Collings D1A VN was made in 2012, and it boasts some very nice upgrades to the standard D1 spec sheet. First, the "A" indicates it has an upgraded Adirondack Spruce top. Famously used during the 1930s golden age of acoustic guitars, Adirondack Spruce offers exceptional headroom, power, and dynamic range—in a dreadnought, Adirondack can be ideal for players with a strong attack or those who need clarity in ensemble settings. Second, the "VN" means Vintage Now neck profile, which gives you just a little more to hang onto than the standard Collings neck carve. This D1A VN also has a prewar-appropriate 1-3/4" nut width.
This 2012 Collings D1A VN shows some signs of play and use, but it's in pretty good shape for a played-in used guitar. In particular, there is moderate pick wear around the edges of the pickguard, and the center of the back shows some finish wear from rough fabrics. There is one ding worth noting on the back edge of the lower bout (see photos), and the back edge of the peghead shows some scuffs at the sharp corners. The saddle appears to be a replacement bone saddle, and the previous owner installed a strap button on the neck heel. The setup is nice and low, perhaps even lower than when this guitar originally shipped from Collings.
When brand new, Adirondack tops are sometimes criticized for being too harsh and glassy, but over the last 13 years, this D1A has developed a sweeter—yet still powerful—voice. It is crisp and articulate, yet steeped in Mahogany richness and warmth. In a band setting, you'll have no trouble cutting through the mix—this dreadnought is a cannon, perhaps even a banjo killer in the right hands. Nevertheless, you don't have to drive it hard because it remains responsive and clear with a light touch. It includes its original TKL hardshell case, which has a prominent Collings sticker on the lid.
