The Sadowsky Semi Hollow fills unique space in the world of electric guitars—it offers the stability and versatility demanded by modern performers, but it's an instrument constructed with the traditional "jazz box" archtop approach. Designed by Roger Sadowsky to deliver authentic archtop tone and vibe at stage volumes that would overwhelm a conventional hollowbody, the Semi Hollow moves effortlessly between jazz, blues, fusion, rock, and beyond. Built around Sadowsky's archtop platform, the Semi Hollow measures 15" across at the lower bout and the body length is 19." The compact laminated flame maple body houses a lightweight chambered spruce center block that dramatically reduces feedback while preserving the open, woody character expected from a fine jazz guitar. Under the hood, the Semi Hollow sports two DiMarzio PAF humbuckers that are custom-wound to Sadowsky's specs. All of these design elements combine for the touch-sensitive, expressive response of a good jazz box, but in a versatile package that can handle high volume and overdrive.
This Sadowsky Semi Hollow was built in 2011, and it shows stunning Maple flame underneath an Iced Tea sunburst finish. The nut width measures 1-11/16" and it's a 24.75" scale. It shows some minor wear and signs of play, especially the picking area (see photos). But all in all, this is a clean gently-used Sadowsky, and the setup is excellent. Low action, no buzzes, dead spots, or issues, and a nice rounded but approachable neck profile. The original hardshell case is included.
The combination of the body construction and a solid Mahogany neck lend a lightweight guitar all around—6 lb 0.8 oz. Typical of Sadowsky, all of the details are artfully executed. The purling around the body edges is high-end but understated. Functional details—like the discreet, accessible control harness and the placement of the input jack closer to the end pin—demonstrate Sadowsky's thoughtful design.
