Based in Tyler, Texas, LaRose Guitars produces instruments in very small numbers, with fewer than 50 leaving the shop in a typical year. LaRose’s designs draw on classic American forms while incorporating D’Agostino’s own ideas about construction, electronics, and the use of highly figured woods. The result is a line of instruments that feels more like the work of an individual artisan than a conventional production guitar.

The 1 Ton Hollow Boy is one of LaRose’s signature designs, developed over several years as D’Agostino refined its chambering, neck, and electronics to give it a voice of its own. Earlier versions of the 1 Ton established the basic semi-hollow concept, combining a classic single-cutaway shape with a traditional f-hole on the bass side. This 1 Ton Hollow Boy features a White Limba body with an exotic wood top that shows off some amazing grain. A soft-edge burst finish brings out the grain and character, while a strip of pearloid binding around the back edge separates the dark finish from the natural-finish White Limba back. Many LaRose guitars feature bolt-on necks, but this one has a set neck.

LaRose guitars don’t have serial numbers, but we estimate this guitar was made in the 2010s. Interestingly, the pot codes date to 1998, though the Arcane Triple Clone humbuckers and hardware suggest a more recent build. The parts are all premium throughout, including a Mastery bridge fitted with Gotoh compensated brass Tele saddles for proper intonation, along with Kluson Supreme tuning machines. A StewMac Zero Glide nut helps ensure a solid setup and excellent playability. The guitar includes a featherweight zipper case that we believe is original, as well as the brass Mastery saddles. That said, the current setup with the Gotoh saddles is exceptional!

This 2010s LaRose 1 Ton Hollow Boy shows minor signs of play and use, especially in the picking area, but nothing too offensive (see photos). The finish has settled into the top grain somewhat, particularly along the bass-side edge of the lower bout. The truss rod cover is a little scuffed, too. All in all, it’s a quality used guitar with a lot to offer. The combination of semi-hollow construction and Arcane humbuckers provides plenty of tonal versatility. It has a 25" scale length and a 1-3/4" nut width, giving you a little extra room to stretch out on the 10" radius fingerboard.
