If you've ever given PRS a hard time for the Silver Sky, you probably haven't seen the EG Series, which debuted in 1990. These guitars feature bolt-on necks and slab bodies with all the electronics housed in the pickguard. Despite the slick finishes and John Mayer's endorsement, the Silver Sky wasn't exactly a new concept for PRS.

At first glance, the EG-1 looks a lot like classic Fullerton, CA designs, but this versatile electric guitar has distinct PRS style and precision deeply in its DNA. The EG-1 features a solid double-cutaway Alder body and a bolt-on Maple neck with a Rosewood fingerboard. It has a tremolo assembly with spring sets into the back of the guitar. The pickups and electronics are mounted onto the pickguard, which drops into the body routing. Simple and effective. Sound familiar? Don't let the resemblance fool you—the EG-1 is a hard-working guitar that could only be delivered from PRS.

To start, it has a 25" scale, which makes bends way more accessible than the longer 25.5" scale you may expect to find. Next, the PRS's tremolo design is more refined than earlier design. It's known for being smooth and expressive, while keeping the tuning stable. Like other PRS guitars, the EG-1 has a flatter 12" fingerboard radius for a faster feel between the strings and easier barre chords.

Under the hood, the EG-1 is rigged up with two PRS humbuckers and a Lindy Fralin single coil in the middle. Its controls are simplified: a 5-way switch to explore the full range of combinations, and then straightforward master volume and master tone across all positions. The tone control is also a push/pull that allows you to coil tap the humbuckers

This 1992 PRS EG-1 is a sweet electric guitar that delivers a wide range of sounds. It features a pretty two-tone sunburst finish. It suffered a minor body crack right by the neck joint, but it has been professionally repaired by Colorado-based luthier Kevin Chelf. From there, the guitar shows some cosmetic playwear, and there are bumps around the edges and on the back of the neck (see photos—nothing too offensive). The current setup is nice and low, and the frets are in great shape. All in all, this '92 EG-1 rips and it includes its original case.
