1979-ohagan-shark-a37028
1979 O’Hagan Shark

Originally a music teacher and instrumentalist, Jerry O’Hagan started out importing Japanese-made guitars, before turning to his own instrument designs around 1978–1979 under the O'Hagan name. Based in the Minneapolis area, O’Hagan guitars and basses were entirely U.S.-made with quality woods, distinctive body shapes, and elaborate neck-through construction uncommon for such a small builder. O’Hagan instruments were made in very limited numbers from approximately 1979 until the early 1980s, and total production probably only hit the low thousands before economic factors and competitive pressures led the company to close around 1983.

Part of O'Hagan's introductory model lineup, the Shark is essentially a narrower, more playable take on the Explorer form, and it's better optimized for seated play. This Shark dates to 1979, and it features an elaborate neck-through design with a 25" scale length. The neck is three-ply Maple/Walnut/Maple, and it runs all the way from the end pin to the headstock, which is itself another piece of Walnut. There is no neck "heel" per se, so the neck is nicely contoured where it meets the body, allowing for a smooth transition up the fingerboard. Then, two Walnut wings make the body, and their eye-catchings carves are designed for balance and comfort. For electronics, this O'Hagan Shark is loaded with high-octane DiMarzio humbuckers with a three-way switch, individual volume controls, and a tone control.

This 1979 O'Hagan Shark bass has been played and enjoyed, and it shows some general wear and tear around the body. There are some scuffs and finish imperfections from age (particularly around the switch area), but honestly it's in nice shape for its age. Signs of the years, but not much as far as signs of misuse. The back of headstock is signed by Jerry O'Hagan, and there is some wear from a hanger yoke on the edges of the headstock. It appears to have all of its original parts and components including a brass nut, 1970s Gotoh tuners, and a sleek intonatable Badass-style bridge.

This 1979 O'Hagan Shark is a ripping player with low action and powerful pickups that will push your amp into smooth saturation. The neck profile is a soft C that feels fast, and the unique contour where it meets the body encourages you to dive into the upper register. This Shark includes its original case and original O'Hagan warranty card. This is a cool guitar that feels like a time capsule to the 1970s. Throw this in the back of your Gremlin, El Camino, or Country Squire, and you'll be ready for the gig.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0080/2930/6939/files/1979O_HaganSharkGuitar_A37028_-Detail05.jpg?v=1774462005
