Seizing on the success of their amplifiers (thanks to the Fab Four, the Rolling Stones, et al), Vox was eager to sell electric guitars and basses, too. But in the early '60s, they couldn't keep ahead of production in England, so Vox contracted out to companies like Eko and Crucianelli who could supply affordable guitars and basses made in Italy.

Released in 1965, the V236 Panther was made by Eko and sold through 1966. The Panther is a slight improvement from the earlierVox Bassmaster because it has an adjustable truss rod. The 1966 Thomas Organ catalog touted the Panther for its "extremely slender neck," which we'll admit is one of the more narrow, comfortable necks you're likely to find.

Because of the natural-finish neck and headstock (instead of black finish), this Panther was likely made in 1966. With the 30" scale, narrow 1-3/8" nut, and lightweight construction (5 lbs 4.7 oz), this Panther feels like such an approachable, easy-to-play bass. Its small stature is just so much fun, and the '60s Vox stylings are too cool!

As far as condition, there is some expected wear and tear, especially around the edges, and the metal parts are tarnished and rusted in places (see photos). But this 1966 Panther finds us with all of its original parts and components. The original four-pole single coil pickup sounds great, and the playability is excellent. One note—the current tape wound strings have been on it since at least the '70s. The previous owner acquired it as payment for a bar gig in the mid-'70s, and because of the narrow neck, he was always too afraid to change the strings and disrupt the playability. The worn-in dead strings sound fantastic. Low-end thump and that classic dry, short-scale sound. Original case and original bridge cover included.
