1963-fender-reverb-04514
1963 Fender Reverb

Instantly recognizable—and deeply embedded in the evolution of guitar music—the Fender Reverb unit was introduced in the early ‘60s to bring space and ambience to the electric guitar sound. These standalone tube-driven units are a cornerstone of the Fender tone. Heard on countless recordings, the Reverb unit helped define surf rock, but at the same time, it was adopted by players of all genres, too. Beyond the historical importance, the Reverb unit adds dimension, bloom, and unmistakable character to a guitar tone without overwhelming the core voice of the instrument. Sure there have been reissues, but nothing sounds like a vintage Fender Reverb!

The tube chart on this Fender Reverb is stamped with "MI," which corresponds to September of 1963. It functions 100% as it should and sounds fantastic—lush, rich, and spacious. From what we can tell, all of its original parts and components are still in place, down to the two-prong power cord. All three transformers date from the 1st half of 1963, and all three pots date to the 29th week of 1963. With its stylish black tolex covering and silver grille cloth, this '63 Reverb unit is an early example of Fender's iconic Black Panel cosmetics.

The Fender Reverb has a a simple control layout—Dwell, Mixer, and Tone—that offers remarkable versatility, allowing you to push much further than on-board amp reverb. Shape the response from warm and ambient to bright and splashy; dial in exactly the right sound for your music. Throughout, there is an immediacy and harmonic richness to vintage tube-driven reverb, and the stand-alone unit also hits an interesting part of your signal because it goes directly into the preamp instead of after. There are sounds on famous records that can only be recreated with a genuine Fender Reverb unit.

This 1963 Fender Reverb is in nice condition all around. The metal parts are somewhat corroded, and the black face plate shows some authentic wear from the years (see photos). The tube chart is torn and frayed, but still legible and in place. There are two versions of the 5G15 circuit, and this is the earlier schematic that is powered by a 6K6GT, which is smoother, mellower, and less aggressive than the later 6V6 version. For anyone chasing authentic vintage Fender atmosphere, this one delivers the unmistakable bloom, splash, and depth heard across generations of recordings. An all-time classic!
