No guitar demonstrates the sweet, classic "Martin Sound" quite like a good D-18. Since 1934, the 14-fret D-18 has been Martin's flagship mahogany dreadnought. Its voice is powerful and well-balanced with mid-range that cuts and the dreadnought low-end thump we all love so much.

In the post-war era, the Martin D-18 carried forward the legacy of its prewar predecessors, while developing a distinct voice of its own. After wartime material restrictions eased, Martin refined its construction techniques, introducing rear-shifted bracing, and a slightly fuller neck profile. More rugged than earlier examples—and often packing more headroom for a heavy right hand—postwar D-18s retain the rich, balanced character that makes mahogany dreadnoughts so beloved.

This 1950 Martin D-18 (serial #116700) produces a big sound that is woody and warm, yet articulate and responsive. It delivers crisp note definition with a dry, punchy midrange that cuts through a mix. The top-end sparkle and fundamental clarity make it a great choice for flatpickers and singer-songwriters alike. Like a lot of post-war D-18s, the bass is there with the attack but it rolls off while the mids and trebles sustain, which makes this guitar fit in nicely to a string band. With a rosewood D-28, sometimes you're stepping on the bass player's toes, whereas the mahogany finds a better fit into the mix. It features a 1-11/16" nut width, and the 1950 Martin neck profile feels full but approachable with a soft V.

This 1950 Martin D-18 has had some history of repairs, but setup is absolutely dialed and it's ready to roll. The action is low with medium gauge strings (.013-.056), and there is plenty of saddle to drive the top and allow for any adjustment down the road. The frets are recently dressed, so the notes ring out clear and true up and down the neck. In the past, the neck has been reset and there's a small wedge underneath the fingerboard that helps provide the proper neck angle. There is a repaired surface crack in the neck heel that was probably an unfortunate victim of the neck reset. The treble side of the X-bracing was reglued for ~2-3" and you can see a witness line and some pencil marks inside the top (see photo). From there, the bridge is a replacement but it's a nice match for the fingerboard. There are three repaired cracks in the back, and there's a small cosmetic repair on the bass side of the soundhole (see photos).

This 1950 Martin D-18 is a great-sounding, great-playing mahogany dreadnought. There is nothing quite like a good, played-in Martin guitar. It includes a basic tweed hardshell case.
