Since Martin’s introduction of the 14-fret dreadnought in 1934, few guitars have influenced how guitars are built and how we play them as much as the D-28 (except perhaps the D-18). The flagship of Martin’s Standard Series, the modern D-28 features a solid Sitka Spruce top and solid East Indian Rosewood back and sides, which produce a rich, full-sounding tone that cuts through any mix. This 2015 D-28 is a great example of the pre-2017 model. Its sound is very typical of the D-28: loud and powerful with superb clarity, shimmering trebles and excellent definition, particularly in the bass notes. With such versatility, it’s easy to understand why the D-28 appeals so many different plays across so many different genres. From bluegrass to rock and everywhere in between, the D-28 is a guitar that performs well in every setting, and a good D-28 only gets better with age. Its understated, style-28 appointments offer an aesthetic that is as distinctly Martin as the tone. Its standard-taper low profile neck, 1-11/16″ nut width and PLEK machine setup offer a smooth, comfortable playability that wasn’t attainable in past years. This 2015 D-28 sports a K&K Pure Mini, which offers an authentic, natural tone when plugged in. For a relatively new guitar, the top has opened up quite a bit, with only a few cosmetic scratches and dings (please see pictures), but none are serious. The original case is also included. As this 2015 D-28 shows, the Martin Standard Series offers the benchmark by which all fine American guitars are judged.
