From his shop in Goderich, Ontario, guitar-maker Josh House is building top-notch instruments and a strong reputation, too. Josh describes his approach to building as "a blend of traditional and modern techniques." He pairs time-tested methods (such as dovetail neck joints and hide glue construction) with modern innovation (such as forward-thinking bracing patterns, carbon-fiber neck reinforcement, and more precise finishing methods).

This 2009 Piedmont Standard is the 43rd guitar built by Josh. Inspired by the vintage L-00 template, the Piedmont is the perfect fusion of vintage and modern. This one features a Western Red Cedar top and East Indian Rosewood back and sides. Its body looks the part for an L-00, and like some prewar examples, the neck meets the body at the 13th fret. It shows a high level of craftsmanship and substantial build quality. All in all, it's an impressive instrument from a fresh name in the industry.

The Cedar top gives this Piedmont Standard nice warmth and broken-in feel, like an old guitar. Its overall sound remains balanced with good clarity and the shimmering richness we expect from Rosewood. A perfect fit for Ragtime or Blues, this Piedmont Standard has just enough vintage vibe, but its voice sounds nuanced and refined, like only a modern builder can achieve. High-end details such as Wisconsin Cherry wood binding and rosette make this handmade guitar seem like it should be much more expensive.

This 2009 House Piedmont Standard shows some superficial signs of play and use (especially on either side of neck joint, see photos), but it's very clean for its age and has no history of repairs or issues. The current setup is low and inviting, and fret wear is minimal. It includes a hardshell case that isn't a perfect fit, but does a great job keeping this lovely guitar safe!
