From 1933 to 1942, Gibson used the "Kalamazoo" name to sell a line of low-cost, no-frills department-store guitars. Similar in size to the Gibson Nick Lucas, the Kalamazoo KG-11 has developed a cult following as one of the more inspiring, depression-era guitars. With its squat shoulders and ladder bracing, the KG-11 is a quintessential blues guitar.

Here's a KG-11 with serious vibe and character. The factory order number is no longer legible, but the neck block is the proper, squared-off design that became standard after the end of '33. Because of the strong V neck carve, the three-ply rosette, and the lettering on the peghead, we believe this KG-11 was made in 1934 or 1935, but possibly as late as '36 or '37.

While this old KG-11 shows some wear and tear, it was recently brought back to life by Todd Cambio of Fraulini Guitars. What sticks out the most—and gives this Kalamazoo such cool character—is the new black top finish. With the appropriate Tigerstripe pickguard, you might be tempted to think it's original. It also has a new bridge that matches the original Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard perfectly. A properly compensated bone saddle gives you the tone and intonation stability you never had from the original design.

Inside the soundhole, a 1930s Montgomery Ward sticker adds authentic vibe. As you look around with a mirror, there are four repaired back cracks, and the braces have been reglued in various places. The playability is excellent thanks to a good neck reset, a new bone nut, and properly-crowned frets.

As for sound, this KG-11 captures every bit of the bluesy, boxey mid-range growl everyone loves from old Kalamazoos. Its woody, old-time sound has more bass and treble than you might expect from a ladder-braced guitar. Very often these Kalamazoos need love to be 100%, but fortunately this one is already where it needs to be—a great player with authentic mojo and unique charm. Hardshell case included!
