Introduced in 1931, the L-00 would become a pivotal Gibson model, influencing decades of guitar building and inspiring countless musicians. This is a rare early 1931 12-fret Gibson L-00, representing the initial design elements of this iconic Gibson flat-top model. It boasts a Mahogany top and an ebony finish with white binding around the top, giving it a classy "tuxedo" look. This particular guitar is one of the very first batches made, predating the more common 14-fret versions sold until World War II.

With a 1920s style silver stenciled script "The Gibson" logo, a single-bound top, and a 3-ply sound hole ring, this L-00 showcases relatively plain ornamentation. Despite its simplicity, it incorporates Gibson's adjustable truss rod, which was a selling point distinguishing it from similar budget models of the time. The neck profile is a surprisingly modern-feeling "C" profile, differing from the deep "V" profile adopted in later versions. It provides familiar comfort for contemporary players.

The early L-00s are known for their light construction, responsiveness, and playability. This 1931 12-fret has an open, rounded, and resonant tone with rich Mahogany overtones. Although it has a Mahogany top, it still has a wide dynamic range, and it is not lacking in detail and treble content. It delivers a surprisingly powerful and punchy tone for its small body size, and its versatility makes it suitable for various styles (and most unsprigingly, the blues).

Despite its age, the years have been unusually kind to this 1931 L-00. There is a notable crack on the back that is repaired and cleated. The bridge has been shaved down, and there is a new saddle. But fortunately the bridge doesn't appear to have lifted and or become an issue, and the bridge plate is original as well. The nut is likely replaced, and even though the 3rd and 4th string pegs are bent, the original tuners still hold tune properly. The frets may be original, and the neck joint may also be original. There are nicks, scratches, bruises, and of course the obvious play wear, especially on the top. The finish is worn thin on the back of the neck, behind frets 1-4, evoking a smooth, authentic vintage feel.

This 1931 Gibson L-00 is a fine example of the early 12-fret specs, and it's also an inspiring guitar with deeply nuanced sound. It plays every bit as nicely as could ask from a prewar guitar. It includes a modern TKL hardshell case for protection, ensuring its continued preservation for years to come.
