When Fender launched the Custom Shop in 1987, the goal was to bring about a higher level of Fender craftsmanship. The Custom Shop was founded as the "best-of-the-best" department, where their top luthiers craft the finest renditions of both traditional Fender models and adventurous new designs.

In the early days—or the John Page era as it's often called—the Custom Shop was a smaller operation, but their hands-on approach and high-level expertise allowed them to build anything they could imagine. Ultimately, the Custom Shop grew into the high-octane entity it is today. But since it was founded, the Custom Shop has lifted the overall image of the Fender brand.

This Custom Shop '54 Stratocaster was made in 1994, and it is part of the "Custom Classics" Series. It sports a gorgeous translucent blonde finish over Swamp Ash, and it has aged and mellowed to a nice straw color. As is typical of '54 Reissues from this era, it has a gorgeous curly Flame Maple neck—a high-end detail you weren't likely to find in the pre-CBS days.

As far as condition, this '94 Custom Shop Strat is about as clean as you could ask from a used guitar. It shows minimal signs of play and use (see photos), but the original owner replaced the strap buttons with buttons for Schaller strap locks. The original buttons are included, as is the original tremolo arm. This Stratocaster came to us with a blonde G&G case that is styled like the blonde cases Fender used in '63.

As far as setup is concerned, this is a great-playing Fender. True to the Strat template, the five-way switch delivers a swiss-army-knife range of sounds. The neck is comfortable, and it has a soft V profile that is more typical of later Strats (think '56-'57). Notes ring out clear and true up and down the fingerboard, and although it is lightweight (7 lbs 2.5 oz without the tremolo arm), it still has nice sustain and natural resonance.
