Not all Maxon pedals were branded Ibanez. In the mid-'70s, many pedals were sold to Saint Louis Music, and some were even sold in the Sears catalog. Nowadays, these hard-to-find off-brand Maxon pedals offer unique mojo and the same '70s tone we all love.

This circa 1976 Roto Phase 1 was likely sold through Saint Louis Music as model "no. 863." The PCB is marked with "999," so it likely shares the same circuitry as the '76-77 Ibanez PT-999 that was housed in a similar blue enclosure with the same knob. Its tone is thick and chewy, capturing every bit of the '70s phaser vibe. But what's interesting about this circuit is how much you can push the front end. As you dig in with your pick (and especially if you play a guitar with hotter pickups), the tone fattens and thickens with smooth overdrive and harmonics.

This 1976 Maxon Roto Phase 1 is in very good condition. A past owner installed a battery adapter so you can use a 9V power source.
