In the world of resonator guitars, Paul Beard's name is practically synonymous with good tone. In the early '80s, Beard was dissatisfied with the quality of resophonic guitars available, so he began creating his own new designs that took advantage of technological advances to produce improved. Beard's innovations are known for their open, balanced sound and strong projection.
The Paul Beard Signature is a collaboration between Paul Beard and Gold Tone that allows resonator players to access the Beard sound at a reasonable price. It features a genuine USA-made Beard cone and spider. On a resonator guitar, those are the most critical elements because they are the engine that drives the sound. From there, the Gold Tone Paul Beard Signature has a solid Mahogany body, which gives the tone a warm, woody quality that sounds sweeter than all-metal resonators.
The PBR-CA is the roundneck version of the Paul Beard Signature, and it also has a cutaway that makes it easier to dig into the upper register. It's a stylish instrument, too—sunburst finish, Curly Maple binding, snowflake inlays, etc. But even though its so gorgeous, its articulate, well-rounded tone is what sets it apart from the rest.
