The Hard Drive is a ground-up modern distortion from JHS Pedals—not a rework, not a clone, and not based on a classic topology. Conceived in 2016 as a way to capture the high-gain tones of the ’90s and 2000s post-grunge and alternative rock era, it evolved over eight years into JHS’s most aggressive and expansive dirt pedal to date. This is a full-commitment distortion designed to move from tight, amp-like crunch to saturated, stage-filling drive without losing clarity.

Internally, the Hard Drive takes a fresh approach. Cascaded gain stages feed a hard-limiting circuit, followed by a Class AB amplifier section that drives a sweepable midrange EQ and Baxandall-style bass and treble controls. The result is a distortion that feels structured and controlled, even at higher gain settings. It can be dialed for focused, mid-pushed grind or opened up into a broad, modern wall of sound that cuts cleanly through a dense mix.

The Hard Drive also represents the final design work of former JHS head engineer Cliff Smith. The circuit was finalized just weeks before his passing in 2021, capping years of experimentation and refinement. Rather than chasing a single reference point, the design blends multiple inspirations into something original—an approach that reflects both Cliff’s technical depth and his commitment to making solid-state circuitry respond with the feel and dimensionality players expect from a great valve amp.

Controls are comprehensive but intuitive: Volume sets overall output; Drive determines the amount of distortion; Bass and Treble operate as a Baxandall EQ (noon is flat, left cuts, right boosts); Middle boosts or scoops the selected mids; and Mid Freq chooses which frequencies the Middle control affects. Silent soft-touch switching and buffered bypass round out the package. Finished here in black, the Hard Drive is a serious, modern distortion for players who want precision, flexibility, and real high-gain authority.
