At NAMM this year, Collings announced that—for the first time—they would offer a “Vintage Satin” ultra-thin nitrocellulose finish as a no-charge upgrade on any of the Traditional Series builds. Inspired by the classic building techniques of the '30s, the Collings T-Series are new guitars that feel and sound like treasured vintage guitars. To see them in this beautiful, non-reflective satin finish just looked right to us.
The Traditional Series (or "T-Series”) reflects Bill Collings' return to his guitar making roots, and these models offer a new tonal variation on the distinctive Collings sound. Each T-Series guitar is built using animal protein glue and a very thin, all nitrocellulose lacquer finish, making them exceptionally dynamic and responsive. Bracing and tone woods are adjusted for weight and thickness to create a voicing characterized by warm, rounded highs and a present low midrange, while retaining a quick attack and strong projection.
We ordered this Collings D1 SB T Satin (Serial #30907) at the NAMM show in January, but because of the obvious delays of 2020, it took quite a while to show up in Telluride. It was well, well worth the wait! On this one, we speficifed a Torrefied Sitka top (or as Collings calls it, "Baked Sitka" top) to try to make it sound even more like a vintage guitar, and the upgraded top wood definitely helps the guitar sound more open and played-in. Beyond the sunburst and the satin finish, the only further customization was to specify a drop-in saddle instead of the cutthrough saddle that is standard on Traditional models. We wanted to ensure there was plenty of room for any setup adjustments that become necessary down the road, and since this guitar was built with the performing musician in mind, we also didn't want to limit what pickups could be installed for the stage.
