Since we became a Collings dealer more than 15 years ago, the OM2H has consistently been among our most popular Collings models. And that's for good reason, too—the OM2H produces balanced, complex tone that shines in a wide variety of genres, and its accurate, immediate response—paired with comfortable, small-body feel and smooth playability—appeal to a wide variety of playing styles.
One of our favorite variations on the OM2H is the Deep Body option. 4-5/8" deep at the end pin, the goal is increased resonance and increased overall bass presence. Despite the greater depth, it remains a comfortable, manageable mid-sized guitar, and its EQ falls in line with bigger guitars, such as dreadnoughts and jumbos. This OM2H Custom Deep Body (serial #36952) features an upgraded Old Growth Sitka Top, a 2-Style Sunburst finish, and a 1-3/4" nut width.
Old Growth Sitka possesses a high stiffness-to-weight ratio, providing exceptional warmth, headroom, and resonance. We've liked the "Baked" torrefied tops from Collings, but torrefaction is an unnatural process. In this case, decades of natural aging—combined with the high quality of the wood itself—result in a soundboard with more "character" and richness than new Sitka tops. Similar to the goal with Torrefied tops, the concept is to build a new guitar that already sounds broken-in and captures more of the tonal potential that develops over time. Combined with the Deep Body construction, the result is an OM2H with a more open, resonant sound, more bass, and greater overall volume than the catalog spec.
When it comes to the details, nobody does it like Collings—this OM2H Custom Deep Body is a stunning guitar that sounds even more beautiful than it looks. The 2-Style Sunburst pops, and the Herringbone trim is elegant and high-end without being ostentatious. True to the Collings reputation, the playability is absolutely top-level. The standard nut width is 1-11/16", but we find an extra 1/16" can be better fit for most players. This Collings is versatile with a detailed sound and plenty of headroom.
