Less than 20 years ago, good quality American-made acoustic guitars were still available at reasonable prices. Nowadays, everything priced under $1,200 is made in Mexico or somewhere overseas, so it can be hard to believe that modest, hard-working guitars were still made in America just a short while ago.

Introduced in 1995, the original Martin Road Series were proudly made in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. These are stripped-down, bolt-on neck guitars with satin finishes, but they're still quality USA-made acoustic guitars. With solid Spruce tops and genuine rosewood fingerboards, the DM and the rosewood DR were a good buy in their day, and in today's used market, they're still an exceptional value, especially when they include their hardshell case.

This 2004 Martin DR has held up nicely over the years, and it's in excellent condition all around. It features the standard Solid Spruce top and laminate Rosewood back and sides, and it produces robust, powerful dreadnought tone with shimmering trebles and nice clarity. The modern Road Series models have Richlite composite fingerboards and bridges, but in 2004, the DR had a genuine Rosewood fingerboard and a genuine Rosewood bridge. It shows some expected playwear in all the obvious areas, especially around the back edge of the body along the waist where it rests on your knee (see photos). There is also some adhesive rash on the bass side, right above the neck joint—probably the result from some old self-adhesive pick holder reacting with the finish. It plays nicely with low action

Overall, this 2004 Martin DR is a fantastic American-made dreadnought with a lot to offer, especially considering the price. If you need rich dreadnought tone, the DR might be the prescription for you! Original hardshell case included.
